According to Dr. Thompson, the majority of us have an excess. The calcium cascade occurs if we have excess calcium in our body. It leads to needing more magnesium to keep the calcium/magnesium ratio in balance. A relative magnesium deficiency leads to increased muscle tension, and nerve endings firing erratically and other electrical malfunctions in our body. In its need for more magnesium, our body suppresses adrenal function to retain more of it. Adrenal suppression causes a continuous loss of sodium and potassium in our urine and immune system depression. This leads to a loss of sodium needed to produce stomach acid to digest protein. This causes heartburn and digestive disorders. Sodium depletion leads to a failure of cell membrane electrical potential ion exchange. This voltage potential is necessary for cellular function and is the mechanism all cells (except fat cells) utilize to get essential amino acids and glucose into all of our cells. So, fat cells keep absorbing glucose since they are not dependent upon sodium while the rest of the body starves. Intracellular potassium decline leads to type 2 hypothyroidism and increased cravings for glucose and increased food intake and a host of metabolic problems and failures. Countless cell metabolic pathways all tie back to each other in diverse ways.

One last study—the FDA in the United States utilizes U.S. Preventive Services Task Forces to investigate and report on items of interest. In 2013, a U.S. Preventive Services Task Force reviewed studies involving supplementation with up to 1000 milligrams of calcium and 400 milligrams of vitamin D. There astounding conclusion was that this supplementation did nothing to prevent bone fractures. Nothing is a very strong word I seldom find in statistical studies. They are saying that inorganic calcium supplementation is a complete waste of money. It doesn’t do what it was supposed to do. But do medical professionals and the public still believe calcium supplementation is a necessary preventive course of action? They do. Why? Doctors get their education from the same people who have a vested financial interest in selling them inorganic calcium supplements.

The study reported that while there was no positive benefit, there were significant negative effects. Calcium supplementation increased kidney stones 17% and was implicated in heart disease. A European study concluded that calcium supplementation doubles the risk of heart disease. What are kidney stones made of? They are calcified little stones. Adding more calcium stones to our diet is probably not a good idea for our kidneys. And heart disease or atherosclerosis is actually referred to as hardening of the arteries. What causes hardening of the arteries? It isn’t cholesterol. It is calcified plaque—calcium deposits! If the calcium is not deposited in the bones, where does it go? It gets laid down in the soft body tissues of the circulatory system, i.e., arteries. We are so focused on cholesterol that no one is paying attention to the calcium. Anyone who has experience pouring concrete knows that if we want concrete to harden faster we use calcium. Calcium hardens concrete faster! What does it do in our body? Studies like these never make it to television. They appear in journals which most of the public doesn’t read. Do we know anyone who reads The Annals of Internal Medicine? I can count the number I know on one finger and I’m a science nerd.

When this FDA sponsored report on calcium came out in the news journals and before it got buried in the medical archives, the authors made an interesting comment in their interview. They said, “Calcium in food doesn’t seem to cause these problems.” Our body is designed to eat plant-based vitamins and minerals.
