popcornPopcorn is one of my favorite treats. I simply love it as I love ALL corn! But, I have been leery of anything that comes from corn since most of the corn production in the U.S. is genetically modified–an estimated 90% of it! That basically means everything we eat that comes from corn will be GMO. The good news is there are lots of options for non-GMO popcorn and it’s actually getting easier to find. Many of the “regular” grocery chains are now carrying items labeled USDA Organic and/or NON GMO Project Verified.

Corn-on-the-cob or Corn Tortilla  Shells

It’s more difficult to find things like corn-on-the-cob or corn tortilla shells if you want homemade enchilada’s or tacos for instance. But you can find them in health food stores usually in the freezer section. Rarely, have I seen them fresh unless I find a local farmer who grows non-GMO corn. It’s a very sad fact that it’s about impossible to get that delicious corn on the cob fresh since no one can tell you in the grocery store (and even in most health food stores) if their corn is GMO or not…so assume that it is.

Reading Labels

When reading labels on anything bottled, packaged, bagged or boxed, if you see corn in the ingredients (HFCS, corn syrup, corn starch, corn meal etc., etc., etc.,) it most certainly is GMO. So, look for those guarantees mentioned above that are suppose to ensure we are eating what’s real and not what’s been made to look real. I hope one day we will have the option to KNOW what’s in our food. Until then, protect yourself and your families by reading labels and avoiding food that’s been altered.
